In 1966, Classics Netherlands made a bold decision: they introduced American superheroes from Marvel Comics to the Dutch audience. These American comics from that era are now commonly known as Silver Age comics.
HIP Comics served as an experimental platform for the emerging "Pop Art" heroes, with various series taking turns on its pages.
By 1971, Classics Netherlands recognized that there was a substantial fan base for American heroes among Dutch readers. The HIP series came to an end, and each series that had appeared in HIP Comics up to that point started its own "Classics" series, picking up from where they left off in HIP Comics. This marked the conclusion of the HIP era.
Do you perhaps remember those days? It was a time when the Hulk was known as the "Rauwe Bonk," and the Fantastic Four were referred to as the "Vier Verdedigers." Those were delightful times. As a child, I delved into the rich language of 1960s superheroes like Prins Namor, Thor, and Reed Richards. The Dutch translations often offered marvelous adaptations of Stan "The Man" Lee's bombastic prose. The psychedelic art of Jack "The King" Kirby could captivate me for hours, especially those collage-like panels that held a hypnotic allure.
Compared to today's tough and highly commercialized comic scene, the HIP Comics of yesteryears are wonderfully innocent and lighthearted.
